Sardonyx is a variety of the silica mineral called chalcedony which contains variegated colored orbs or spherical inclusions or zones. This variety with heavy bands of reddish-brown carnelian of the silica are colored by impurities of iron oxide.
Carnelian has a long history of being an ornamental stone with many early religious or spiritual symbols were etched into it or totems carved from it.
