About 50 million years ago Knightias swam in a
large body of fresh water that once covered parts of Wyoming and
Utah. When the fish died it sank to the bottom of the lake where it
was quickly buried with sediment. These soft sediments encased
the fish and over time the sediment hardened to rock preserving the
skeleton. These fish are quarried in a geologic area known as
the Green river formation. They are Eocene in age.
